Brisbane, Are you ready for it?
Mon 05 Nov, 2018

Queensland’s love story with Taylor Swift is set to continue tomorrow when the Taylor Swift reputation Stadium Tour hits The Gabba.

Minister responsible for major venues, Mick de Brenni said, “on the night we’ll have about 2,300 staff working across a range of areas, including security, event operations, catering and hospitality, to ensure the event runs smoothly.”

Mr de Brenni said he was pleased to see entertainment content at the iconic sporting venue, maximising the use of the asset.

“Every time an event like Taylor is held here, it keeps stadium revenues turning over, delivering an overall lower ticket cost to all events – and that’s good news for music fans and sports fans alike,” Mr de Brenni said.

”Logistics in and around the venue are a significant challenge for the venue operators, transport and police.

“By the time my daughter is old enough to come along to a Taylor show, the Gabba Cross River Rail Station will be fully operational, but in the meantime some forward planning is still required to get to and from the venue.

“Taylor fans already know she’ll put on one hell of a show, but they might not have thought about their plans for how to get to the Gabba on time. he said.

“We are helping out with free public transport to and from the venue, and designated areas for drop-offs and pick-ups. Just make sure you plan ahead and consider checking out some of the great local cafes and restaurants in the Gabba precinct as part of the experience.

“Sports fans have also been assured that turf protection is being applied and an ‘end of ground’ rather than ‘centre of ground’ stage configuration would better protect the iconic Gabba wicket.

“The Gabba is undergoing a complete transformation, with around 15,000 square metres of high tech turf-protection over the surface area of the field, including the wicket,” he said.

The Gabba manager Blair Conaghan said The Gabba is the perfect fit for the ten-time Grammy winner’s only Queensland performance.

“Taylor Swift’s recent tour of America was described by Rolling Stone as her ‘finest yet’, and what’s really exciting for Queensland fans is that we’ll be getting those same sets and props that ‘wowed’ the fans overseas,” Mr Conaghan said.

“It’s taken around four days for crews to build the stage, and we’re expecting preparations to really ramp up today with the start of production load-in.

“We’ll also be installing additional food and beverage stands as well as portable food trucks, stocked with 5,000 glasses of champagne, 7,000 glasses of wine and a variety of food and beverage choices.

“This concert is truly not to be missed, so we need concert-goers to pay attention to the conditions of entry and arrive early, so that no one misses a beat,” Mr Conaghan said.

  • Take public transport – Free with your ticket from 12pm. There is no parking at the venue.

  • Arrive early – gates open at 5:30pm, with the show beginning at 7:00pm.

  • Print your ticket- mobile tickets will not be accepted.

  • Know your gate location- you must enter via the designated gate on your ticket.

  • Bags under A4 size only- larger bags will not be allowed into the venue.

  • Keep your hands free for dancing- leave the fairy lights, large banners, professional cameras and artist gifts at home.

  • Got the Tay-shirt? – Merchandise for all artists available at a number of sites outside the venue, with eftpos facilities available.

Concert goers encouraged to move swiftly as show set-up begins
Wed 31 Oct, 2018

Fans attending the Taylor Swift Reputation Stadium Tour are being encouraged to plan ahead and make use of free public transport for next Tuesday’s concert at The Gabba.

The first production trucks began arriving at the venue ahead of set-up for the concert.

The Gabba Manager Blair Conaghan said with such a big crowd headed to the venue, it was vital for concert goers, local residents and motorists to plan ahead.

“Taylor is one of the best-selling musicians of all time and the reaction to this concert overseas and interstate has been phenomenal, so we couldn’t be more excited to host her at The Gabba,” Mr Conaghan said.

“It’s a huge volume of people to shift in and out, so we’ve worked with Brisbane City Council and TransLink to develop a thorough Transport Management Plan, to help us do that safely and efficiently,” he said.

“We’re encouraging concert goers to get to The Gabba well before the scheduled 7:00pm start time, and make use of the free public transport included in their ticket.

“Gates open at 5:30pm with New Zealand indie-pop duo Broods and dance pop sensation Charli XCX supporting, and plenty of food and drink, so I encourage fans to get here early and enjoy all that’s on offer.

“We’ll also have changes to traffic conditions around The Gabba on the day of the concert and in the lead-up as production trucks arrive, so we ask residents to be patient and prepare for any changes to their usual route.

“We’d encourage fans, local residents and motorists who frequent the area to jump on The Gabba website to see how changes may affect them.”

Head of TransLink Matthew Longland said public transport would be the best option to get to and from the concert, with ticket holders able to travel free.

Concert goers will be able to catch dedicated shuttle services every few minutes between 4.30 and 8.30pm in the city and 4.30pm to 8.10pm from Carindale, Eight Mile Plains and Chermside.

Shuttle bus services will also run from The Gabba for an hour after the concert, linking with 17 extra trains running from Central Station.

“TransLink has worked with Brisbane City Council and Queensland Rail to ensure there will be plenty of services to get everyone to and from the concert safely,” Mr Longland said.

“We’re encouraging concert-goers to use our journey planner to plan ahead, to ensure they get to the concert with plenty of time, and know how they’re getting home.”

Deputy Mayor Adrian Schrinner encouraged concert-goers to plan ahead and ditch the car in favour of free public transport, with rolling road closures commencing from 9am.

“Getting the message out to fans was vital to the success of the Adele concerts, with crowds arriving early and leaving The Gabba within 75 minutes of the concert ending,” Cr Schrinner said.

“Planning for the Taylor Swift concert has been a team effort, with The Gabba, TransLink and Council ready to move crowds to and from the venue quickly and safely, with close to 150 extra buses on standby for the event.

“Road users will see lanes closed from as early as 9am on event day, as well as 15-minute parking and drop off zones in local streets, so it’s important residents and motorists plan ahead and pay attention to the updated signage.”

Limited tickets available through ticketmaster.com.au.

Gabba to Host Day-Night Test Over Australia Day Weekend
Fri 11 May, 2018

The Gabba will host its first ever Australia Day Test match following confirmation Australia will take on Sri Lanka in a day-night game in January.

Sport Minister Mick de Brenni said Queenslanders had proven in the past they loved the day-night format of Test cricket and now had a chance to enjoy a long weekend of cricket action on the most Australian weekend of the year.

“There’s not much more Aussie than a game of cricket on the 26th January and first class cricket doesn’t get better than at the Gabba,” Mr de Brenni said.

“This announcement sends a clear message for young Queensland girls and boys - if you’re good enough, there’s a clear pathway to donning the baggy green on home soil.

“I think the growth in women’s cricket will go from strength to strength. With half of all school kids playing already being girls, the women’s T20 will inspire even more girls to have a go.

“Queensland is churning out some outstanding junior cricketers and what’s great about this big ticket event is that it’s destined to see more kids pad up down at their local ovals.

“I want to thank Cricket for their commitment to Queensland - their programs from In2Cricket right through to elite talent pathways and these big ticket events represent one of the best sports development programs going around.

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said she was happy to see another day-night Test match scheduled for the Gabba.

“It’s great that the partnership between Tourism and Events Queensland and Brisbane Marketing has again delivered a world-class sporting event for our state, this time a day-night Test match between Australia and Sri Lanka at the Gabba to be held, for the first time ever, over the Australia Day weekend,” she said.

The Gabba will also host a blockbuster T20 international in November, when Australia takes on India, while the Australian Women’s Team will play New Zealand at Allan Border Field in a T20 International in October.

“It’s exciting to confirm that Brisbane will host a Day-Night Test for the second time in three seasons, and we are pleased to break new ground by staging the Test against Sri Lanka at the Gabba over the Australia Day weekend, the first time this has happened,” Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland said.

“It is also pleasing that the world number one ranked Australian women’s team will be in action again at Allan Border Field, carrying on the success from last season‘s sold-out Women’s Ashes game.”

Queensland Cricket Chief Executive Officer Max Walters said Queensland offered greater venue versatility and hosting potential than any other State.

“Australian Cricket’s strategic vision includes a challenge to us as a sport to innovate and look beyond traditional boundaries,’’ he said.

“We’re pleased that the Australian Women’s team will again start their international campaign in Brisbane at Allan Border Field. Anyone who attended the sold-out game to start the Women’s Ashes series last summer at Albion will no doubt be excited to return to see Australia host the White Caps.”

“Of course we are delighted the Gabba will again be a venue of a pink ball Test against Sri Lanka after successfully hosting Pakistan in its inaugural day/night Test cricket two seasons ago, one of only two venues in the country to host day/night Tests.”

“We will break new ground in hosting a Test match over the Australia Day long weekend, an exciting prospect under lights.”

Brisbane to host World Twenty20 matches in 2020
Tue 30 Jan, 2018

Brisbane will host four Twenty20 cricket world cup matches in 2020 under a deal welcomed today by Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones.

The Gabba will host four Super 12 matches in the men’s tournament while Allan Border Field will host a training camp for five international teams in the lead-up to the women’s tournament.

“Queenslanders know the Gabba is the best venue in the world to watch cricket and the ICC World Twenty20 tournament gives us a chance to show that to the rest of the world,” Ms Jones said.

“It also gives us a great opportunity to showcase our world-class training and preparation facilities at Allan Border Field, including Cricket Australia’s National Cricket Centre, to five of the world’s best international teams.”

Ms Jones said the announcement was not only significant for local cricket fans but also for the tourism industry.

"Limit overs cricket is one the fastest growing sports in the world so this announcement is a great win for Queensland businesses,” she said.

“We know major events help to drive visitors to our great state – under the Palaszczuk Government this sector is tipped to be worth $780 million to Queensland this year, up from $600 million last year.

“We expect these fixtures to generate more than $5 million for Brisbane’s economy and we hope sports fans visiting Queensland stay here for longer than the duration of the tournament to explore some of our world-class attractions.”

The women’s competition will run from February 21 to March 8, 2020 and it will be the first time the tournament has been held as a standalone event.

The iconic Gabba will host four Super 12 matches as part of the men’s competition, which will run from October 18 to November 15, 2020.

Queensland’s World T20 matches will be delivered in partnership between the Queensland Government, Tourism and Events Queensland, Stadiums Queensland, Brisbane Marketing, Queensland Cricket and the World T20 Local Organising Committee.

Queensland Cricket Chief Executive Officer Max Walters said he looked forward to working with the government and associated agencies to make the Twenty20 world cup a successful event to inspire the next generation of boys and girls to love cricket.

"Fans will enjoy seeing the best of the best at Queensland's world class venues, as we showcase our State to the world,” he said.

“Additionally, the legacy that the World T20 events will deliver shall provide cricket at all levels in Queensland with a strong boost to participation levels and growth.”

The Queensland Government is proud to support the World T20 and looks forward to welcoming players, teams and officials to Brisbane in 2020.
